the visitation of alice coltrane by the spirit of igor stravinsky (spring rounds)

ravi coltrane’s father died young so he grew up listening to his mother’s choice in music which was orchestral music - specifically the firebird suite and the rite of spring both by igor stravinsky. this actually wasn’t unusual among jazz musicians at the time - charlie parker had quoted bits of the rite of spring, also ornette coleman (sleep talking), hubert laws, miles davis talks about studying the scores while he was at the julliard music school.

alice coltrane ended up recording the "spring rounds" section on the album eternity, and she had arranged excerpts from the firebird on lord of lords.

she says this of her inspiration to record the piece.

"on march 20, 1972, I was blessed with the good fortune of receiving a visitation from the great master composer...after a warm and intimate discussion on the subject of music, he said, 'i wanted you to receive my vote....'" stravinsky went on to hand Coltrane a vial "of clear, colorless liquid," which, like her namesake in lewis carroll's alice's adventures in wonderland, she swallows.

horsemouth has got his dates wrong (having copied it down in a hurry). in a way the 20th is a better date (it’s more equinoxy).
