'should be happy if I could write, but don't' (thoreau's journals in their box)

'open the diary only in order to lull myself to sleep. but see what happens to be the last entry and could conceive of thousands of identical ones I might have entered over the past three or four years. I wear myself out to no purpose, should be happy if I could write, but don't.'

- franz kafka, the diaries, 25th december 1915

so here it is _____ __________ (or will be, as horsemouth types this). tonight wallace and gromit.

tomorrow evening horsemouth's brother (and his family) arrive.

a photo of thoreau's journals in their box.

'it would be a truer discipline for the writer to take the least film of thought that floats in the twilight sky of his mind for his theme, about which he has scarcely one idea... instead of making a lecture out of such obvious truths, hackneyed to the minds of all thinkers.'  - thoreau, a writer's journal, 25th december 1851.

laurence stapleton makes a selection of thoreau's writings of those  focusing on writing itself rather than the selections made by torrey and allen that focus on the walden parts of the journal.

and here is a photo of horsemouth's diaries and journals in a box. they currently reside back in the wen (and of course there are now more of them - this photo only covers 1992 to 2012).  there's not much in them really. work stuff (initials, time, date, perhaps the title of the course, interesting quotes culled from horsemouth's reading, anniversaries of the recording sessions for jazz albums).

the idea occurs to write about objects (physical things). to mythologise them.

the cassette is three tracks of monitor mixes never released by bush house. all three were subsequently mixed but (horsemouth opines) these mixes were the better ones. the b-side of the cassette horsemouth filled up with mixes of the instrumental tracks he had recorded round ross's. and then... oblivion. none of that came out either.

yesterday night (christmas eve) zoom beers with howard (bottle and a small can) and then dinner and TV.

woman of stone  the latest ghost story for christmas was sadly interrupted by problems with weak signal. and yet what horsemouth saw of it was good. a good frame story. an effective set up for sure. but then horsemouth's appreciation of the denouement was spoiled by poor reception.

so horsemouth pronounces yesterday a success. now there's just today. a misty morning already.
